Summary - A thoughtful look at the contemporary art world and the daily studio practice of Los Angeles based artist, Shane Guffogg as his process is observed and recorded by his studio manager, Victoria Chapman
About writing this book with Shane Guffogg
I began designing monthly newsletters for the internationally acclaimed artist in 2015. Over time, I started to ask questions about the things I was noticing in the studio and commenting on the work Guffogg was making. By 2017 more thoughts and inquires began to fountain. Guffogg honored my curiosity and was always willing to listen and engage in deeper conversation. As a graduate of art school and one who has worked in museums and art galleries, there was much to absorb while watching Guffogg work and shape his life within the art world. These 13 essays, engage in an honest approach as a student might work with his/her mentor - I ask specific questions and Guffogg answers these in complete detail. Working as an assistant over time with any artist, a level of understanding comes about. Researching the contents of Guffogg’s artwork has been personally rewarding and insightful to my life’s lessons. The art world has no rules and there is no manual per se on how to operate. I am often challenged by the rest of the art world; asking myself, “Are those artists doing what he is doing? Are they deeply committed to their practice? And are they making art for the right reasons? By the way, what are the right reasons?” Guffogg helps me explore these types of case by case scenarios as the artists work champions history as well as spirituality. By reading this book you will follow me in and out of the studio learning, listening and watching an important contemporary artist. This book is comprised of my better essays written from 2017 to summer 2019. I am still writing today! The beginning of the book starts light as you get to the middle the content and questioning gets deeper, it's a great companion to read at home or on the run. - Victoria Chapman
